Flight Delayed? Build a Pet-Care Extension Plan Before Leaving Sedalia

The pet-care conversation usually focuses on the days you're gone. The riskier part is the day you're supposed to come back. A canceled connection in Dallas, an ice storm on 50 Highway, a sick kid who pushes the drive home by a day: these are the moments when a pet's care either continues smoothly or quietly falls through a gap.

If you're traveling out of Sedalia this holiday season, here's how to set things up so a change in your return doesn't become a problem for your pet.

Before you leave: five things to put in place

1. A return confirmation step. Decide in advance how you'll confirm you're home. With Funky Bunch Pet Care, our standard is simple: we keep caring for your pet until you've told us you're back. That means the last scheduled visit isn't the end of our responsibility; your message is. Agree on the method (a message in the Time to Pet app is easiest) and agree on who sends it. If you're traveling with a spouse, pick one person so nothing gets assumed.

2. Backup contacts. List at least one local person who can make a decision if you're unreachable, and one who can physically get to the house if needed. Include their relationship to you and what they're authorized to do. Also make sure your vet's contact and your preferences for emergency care are current in your profile.

3. Home access that doesn't depend on you. A lockbox with a key, or a keypad code, means a sitter can get in for an extra visit without a handoff. If you use a smart lock, confirm the code works before you leave and that it isn't tied to a temporary schedule that expires on your original return date. That last one catches people every year.

4. Enough supplies for extra days. Pack for your trip plus three days. Food, litter, medication, and anything else with a countdown. Running out of a prescription on day six because you planned for five is a preventable emergency. Leave the supplies where the sitter can find them and note the location in your care instructions.

5. Written instructions that stand on their own. Your care notes should be complete enough that a team member who's never met your pet can walk in and do everything right. Feeding amounts, medication timing, where the leash lives, which door the cat likes to bolt through. Because our team is route-based rather than one assigned sitter, this is how we work every day, and it's also why an extra visit is easy to add: anyone on the team can step in with the same information.

When travel changes: how to extend care

Say it's 4 p.m. on your travel day and your flight into Kansas City just got pushed to tomorrow morning. Here's the sequence.

  • Message us as soon as you know. Don't wait until you've rebooked everything. An early heads-up gives us more room to schedule.

  • Tell us what you need. "We won't be home tonight. Can you add a dinner visit and a morning visit tomorrow?" Specific requests are faster to confirm than open-ended ones.

  • Wait for confirmation before assuming coverage. We'll respond in the app to confirm the added visits and the times. We take on extra visits whenever we can, and our team-based staffing makes that possible far more often than a solo sitter could manage, but we won't tell you a visit is covered until it is. That's the honest version of reliability.

  • Watch for the visit reports. Once the extra visits are on the schedule, they run like any other: arrival, care, photos, report. You'll see each one from wherever you're stuck.

  • Confirm when you're home. That closes the loop, and it's the only thing that ends our responsibility for your pet.

The gap this prevents

Pets don't get hungry on a schedule that respects airline delays. The most common version of this problem isn't a sitter refusing to help; it's an owner who assumed the sitter would "just know," or who had no way to get an extra visit scheduled, or who ran out of food on the extra day. A little setup before you leave eliminates all three.
